_Devin, Augment Code, OpenCode, Zed and goose run both Claude and GPT models, while Codex CLI and Gemini Code Assist leave Claude out._

## The short answer

[goose](/goose), [OpenCode](/opencode) and [Zed](/zed) lead for Claude: each runs it on your own Anthropic key, goose is free, and OpenCode Go costs $10 a month, as does Zed Pro at $10 a month. [Augment Code](/augment-code) and [Devin](/devin) also run Claude, Augment Code from $20 a month, and [Antigravity CLI](/antigravity-cli) offers Claude Sonnet and Opus 4.6 on its free plan until 2 November 2026, and Claude Sonnet and Opus 5.5 on paid Google AI Pro, Ultra and Enterprise.

[Codex CLI](/codex-cli) lists OpenAI models only and needs manual setup for any third-party provider, and [Gemini Code Assist](/gemini-code-assist) runs Google's Gemini models alone, so a team that wants Claude should skip both.

We answered 35 questions about what these 8 agents do, each on the vendor's own pages, between 2 September 2026 and 23 October 2026.

- Devin, Augment Code, OpenCode, Zed and goose all run Claude models, from opus and sonnet in Devin to the Opus, Sonnet, Haiku and Fable families in Augment Code, with a direct Claude subscription link in OpenCode and both hosted and own-key Claude in Zed and goose.
- Codex CLI and Gemini Code Assist offer no Claude model, and Gemini Code Assist offers no GPT model either.
- Augment Code, OpenCode, Zed and goose are the 4 of the 8 with full model choice, down to each message in Augment Code, each session or agent in OpenCode, a selector across hosting, keys and local servers in Zed and a mid-session switch in goose.
- Antigravity CLI runs Claude Sonnet and Opus 4.6 on its free plan and Google AI Pro until 2 November 2026, when Google removes them, and Claude Sonnet and Opus 5.5 on paid Google AI Pro, Ultra and Enterprise. Its one OpenAI-lineage model, the open-weight GPT-OSS-120b, goes on the same day.
- Zed is one of the 6 of the 8 with a free plan, and its Pro plan costs $10 a month.

## The picks

### 1. [Codex CLI](/codex-cli)

**Best for ChatGPT plan holders staying on OpenAI models:** Codex CLI runs GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna from the terminal and bills from the same credit pool as ChatGPT Work and Workspace Agents.

- **Price:** Usage-based
- **Free plan:** yes
- **Who it's for:** Developers who already pay for ChatGPT and want a terminal agent whose edit and command permissions they can inspect before every run.
- **Skip it if:** You want Claude, because Codex CLI offers no Anthropic model, while OpenCode and goose run Claude on your own key.

Codex CLI is OpenAI's terminal agent for reading, editing and running repository code. Its Claude answer is No: sign-in and model support cover OpenAI models, and no Anthropic model appears in any documented model list. You pick the model per run and can define custom providers, but the first-party catalog is OpenAI's.

There is a free plan. Paid use bills as credits mapped to input, cached-input and output tokens per task. You can also sign in with an OpenAI API key or point the provider at Amazon Bedrock with Amazon's own credentials.

For automation, codex exec runs non-interactively in pipelines with API-key or workload-identity sign-in, and TypeScript and Python libraries drive local threads from your own code. It spawns parallel subagents and consolidates their results.

**What it does well**

- Permissions set when it may edit files or run commands and which directories stay writable, visible before every run.
- A built-in review mode scores uncommitted changes and surfaces prioritized findings before you commit.
- The same agent runs in the terminal, a desktop app, VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf and the cloud.

**Where it falls short**

- No Claude: the first-party model catalog holds OpenAI models only.
- Token-metered credits can drain fast: a June 2026 issue documented ChatGPT Plus users spending a 5-hour budget in 2-3 prompts.
- OpenAI, Amazon Bedrock and local models through Ollama switch natively. OpenRouter, Azure and other third-party providers need manual setup in a configuration file.

### 2. [Devin](/devin)

**Best for offloading multi-repo migrations as tickets:** Devin takes a ticket into its own environment and opens a pull request, and fanning migrations across many files, modules or whole repositories out to parallel sessions is its stated use.

- **Free plan:** yes
- **Who it's for:** Engineering teams that want to hand well-scoped migration tickets to an agent from Slack, Microsoft Teams, Linear or the web app.
- **Skip it if:** Skip it for interactive pair programming, since Devin can take 12 to 15 minutes between responses, while Codex CLI and OpenCode work back and forth in the terminal.

Devin is a cloud agent that works a task in its own environment with a shell, code editor and browser, then stops at the pull request for your team to merge. Its Claude answer is Yes: Devin CLI lets you select Anthropic models, with opus and sonnet resolving to the latest in each family. OpenAI models are selectable there too, while cloud sessions document no model selector.

There is a free plan. Self-serve plans include a daily and weekly usage quota, with on-demand credits that roll over month to month, and teams draw from one shared credit pool. Enterprise bills in Agent Compute Units at a rate set in the order form.

The Devin API is included on every plan, and an authenticated MCP server lets any MCP client create sessions, query repositories and manage playbooks. Automations and schedules start sessions from events with nobody tagging Devin.

**What it does well**

- Parallel sessions for migrations across many files, modules or whole repositories.
- Claude and OpenAI models selectable in Devin CLI.
- Independent security certification (SOC 2 Type II) since September 2024.

**Where it falls short**

- An independent test reported a 3-of-20 success rate on a sample of real tasks.
- Ask Devin Deep Mode and Devin Review are usage-billed after the 2-week trial, so review costs climb on busy repositories.
- Cloud sessions document no model selector, so choosing Claude happens in Devin CLI.

### 3. [Antigravity CLI](/antigravity-cli)

**Best for Google AI subscribers wanting a free terminal agent:** Antigravity CLI has a free plan whose reasoning models include Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6 until 2 November 2026 beside Google's Gemini models, under the Google account a subscriber already holds.

- **Price:** Free; Business $30 per seat a month
- **Free plan:** yes
- **Who it's for:** Google AI subscribers and developers leaving the sunset Gemini CLI who want a free terminal agent with Gemini, Claude and gpt-oss models.
- **Skip it if:** You need an open-source license, because its public repository ships no license file, while OpenCode and goose are open source.

Antigravity CLI is Google's keyboard-driven terminal agent. It edits code, runs subagents and gates every tool call. Its Claude answer is Partly: Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6 are selectable on the free plan and Google AI Pro until 2 November 2026, when Google removes them, and Claude Sonnet and Opus 5.5 are on paid Google AI Pro, Ultra and Enterprise. On the OpenAI side, the one option is the open-weight GPT-OSS-120b, which goes on the same day.

On consumer plans, usage meters into your own credit pool. Organizations buy the Business plan through Google Cloud, from $30 per seat a month on Gemini Enterprise Standard or Plus, or pay as they go with no seat fee, billed centrally to the Google Cloud project.

Headless print mode returns structured output with token usage and tool calls and takes prompts on standard input. The CLI shares its engine with the Antigravity desktop app, so a terminal session exports into the app. Large refactors and repository-wide sweeps go to concurrent background subagents.

**What it does well**

- Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6 are selectable on the free plan until 2 November 2026.
- Headless mode is built for pipelines and fails fast when unauthenticated, and a Gemini API key skips the browser sign-in.
- A /boost command escalates hard defects to multi-agent reasoning.

**Where it falls short**

- The free plan loses Claude on 2 November 2026; after that Claude needs paid Google AI Pro, Ultra or Enterprise.
- It does not support the Agent Client Protocol, so it cannot run inside a third-party editor.
- Its public repository has no license file, unlike the open-source Gemini CLI it replaces.

### 4. [Augment Code](/augment-code)

**Best for enterprises running agents across whole codebases:** Augment Code runs fleets of agents across whole codebases on a Context Engine that indexes the code in real time and gives agents up to a 200,000 token context window.

- **Price:** $20 a month for the whole team, up to 50 seats
- **Free trial:** 14 days
- **Who it's for:** Engineering leaders who want agents running full software delivery loops on triggers, with humans at the quality gates.
- **Skip it if:** You want a free plan, because Augment Code starts with a 14-day free trial, while OpenCode, Zed and goose have free plans.

Augment Code is the Cosmos platform for fleets of coding agents across the software lifecycle, plus Auggie CLI and editor extensions. Its Claude answer is Yes: the Opus, Sonnet, Haiku and Fable families are all selectable, beside GPT-5.1 through GPT-5.6 variants. You pick the model per expert, session or message, or opt into Prism routing.

Standard costs $20 a month and Business $100 a month, each a flat price for up to 50 seats with that much usage included. There is a 14-day free trial. Included usage and top-ups draw from one shared team balance, and Enterprise adds per-user budget overrides. All inference bills through Augment, with no bring-your-own model key documented.

Triggers from GitHub, GitLab, Slack, Linear, Jira, schedules and typed webhooks start loops, and agents run in Augment's cloud, your own environment, laptops or dev machines such as Codespaces. Published workflows cover module-by-module legacy migration and epic decomposition across repositories.

**What it does well**

- The Context Engine indexes the whole codebase in real time and is served to other agents over MCP.
- Independent certifications (SOC 2 Type II on both plans and a certified AI management system).
- Claude and GPT models are selectable per expert, session or message.

**Where it falls short**

- All inference bills through Augment, so you cannot run your own model key.
- Cost visibility is a daily aggregate dashboard with no per-model cost breakdown.
- Top-ups expire 12 months after purchase and included usage does not roll over.

### 5. [OpenCode](/opencode)

**Best for teams needing single sign-on with open source:** OpenCode is an open-source agent that includes single sign-on (SSO) with every workspace and runs Claude through an Anthropic key, its own gateway or a connected Claude subscription.

- **Price:** $10 a month
- **Free plan:** yes
- **Who it's for:** Teams that want an open-source coding agent on any model provider, with company sign-in and one prepaid balance for the workspace.
- **Skip it if:** You need an administrative audit trail, because OpenCode logs usage per member but no role or budget changes, while Gemini Code Assist records Admin Activity entries in Cloud Audit Logs.

OpenCode is an open-source coding agent for the terminal, desktop, editor and browser. Its Claude answer is Yes, through an Anthropic API key, the vendor's own gateway or a connected Claude subscription; a ChatGPT Plus or Pro login works for GPT models. OpenCode says it reaches 75+ providers plus local Ollama models, switchable per session.

The core is free; OpenCode Go is $10 a month and Go Plus is $40 a month, while OpenCode Zen bills pay-as-you-go per token. Go caps usage at $12 per 5-hour window, $30 per week and $60 a month.

SSO is included rather than gated behind an enterprise tier, and per-member limits can sit on top of the shared balance. A headless server publishes an API spec covering sessions, messages, files and agents.

**What it does well**

- SSO on every workspace with named providers.
- Claude through your own key, a Claude subscription or the gateway.
- The model is picked per session or per agent, and the gateway is optional.
- Auto-approve mode and scheduled GitHub workflows run tasks unattended.

**Where it falls short**

- Two security advisories, one critical, were published against it on 12 January 2026.
- Any balance left when a workspace is deleted is lost.
- The usage log records requests per member, with no log of role or budget changes.

### 6. [Zed](/zed)

**Best for running external Claude agents inside an editor:** Zed installs eight external agents, Claude Agent and OpenAI Codex among them, from its in-editor Agent Client Protocol registry, so Claude's own agent runs natively inside the editor.

- **Price:** $10 a month
- **Free plan:** yes
- **Who it's for:** Developers who want a fast open-source editor that hosts other vendors' agents natively instead of locking them into one built-in assistant.
- **Skip it if:** You need a managed cloud environment, because Zed's remote development needs your own server reachable over secure shell (SSH), while Devin works in its own cloud environment.

Zed is a Rust-based editor with a built-in agent panel, Zed-hosted models and external agents over the Agent Client Protocol it created. Its Claude answer is Yes: Zed serves Claude models on its hosted plan at published per-million-token rates, and your own Anthropic key works too. OpenAI GPT models are in the same hosted catalog.

Personal is free forever, Pro is $10 a month and Business is $30 per seat a month. Pro bills usage beyond its included credit at API list price + 10%. Bring-your-own-key works on every plan, the free one included, with keys kept in the system keychain.

Zed documents no public API; scripts drive it through the zed command-line tool. The agent stops at a reviewable diff and asks before permission-gated tool calls unless you set tool_permissions.default to allow.

**What it does well**

- Eight external agents install from the in-editor registry, Claude Agent among them.
- Your own model keys work on every plan, including the free one.
- Real-time multiplayer editing with shared screens and in-editor chat.

**Where it falls short**

- Business documents no administrative audit or activity log.
- Pro includes $5 a month in token credits, so heavy AI use adds variable spend.
- Its catalog of community extensions is much smaller than VS Code's marketplace, so some tooling needs manual setup.

### 7. [Gemini Code Assist](/gemini-code-assist)

**Best for Google Cloud teams on VS Code or JetBrains:** Gemini Code Assist brings Gemini agents to VS Code and JetBrains with sign-in through Cloud Identity or Google Workspace and every completion and generation call recorded in Cloud Audit Logs.

- **Price:** $19 per user a month, billed yearly ($22.80 month to month)
- **Free plan:** no; 30-day free trial
- **Who it's for:** Teams standardized on VS Code or JetBrains who already run on Google Cloud.
- **Skip it if:** You need Claude, because it serves Google's Gemini models only on every edition, while Augment Code and OpenCode let you select Claude.

Gemini Code Assist is Google's per-seat assistant and agent for editors, the terminal and GitHub pull requests. Its Claude answer is No: Google's own Gemini models only, with no third-party model on any edition. An admin's release channel decides which Gemini models users get.

There is no free plan; a 30-day free trial is the way in since the personal tier was discontinued on 18 June 2026. Standard costs $19 per user a month on an annual commitment or $22.80 month to month, and Enterprise $45 or $54. Each licensed user gets an individual allowance, including 6000 code requests/day. Once the daily agent quota is spent, a Gemini or Vertex AI key can carry the overflow.

Local codebase awareness is quoted at a 1,000,000 token context window, and Enterprise adds customization indexed over private GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket repositories. Both editions list independent certifications (SOC 1, SOC 2 and SOC 3 plus ISO 27001, 27017, 27018 and 27701).

**What it does well**

- Cloud Audit Logs split Admin Activity and Data Access entries and audit completion and generation calls.
- Identity comes from Cloud Identity, Google Workspace or a federated identity provider.
- A 1,000,000 token context window for local codebase awareness.

**Where it falls short**

- No Claude and no GPT on any edition.
- No public API, so you cannot drive it from your own stack.
- Agent mode, its multi-step multi-file editing, is still labeled preview by Google.

### 8. [goose](/goose)

**Best for a free desktop agent on your own keys:** goose has a free plan and runs as a desktop app on the provider keys you bring or on local models with no key at all.

- **Price:** Free
- **Free plan:** yes
- **Who it's for:** Developers who want a free open-source desktop agent and already hold their own model provider keys or run local models.
- **Skip it if:** You want an agent with its own hosted models, because goose has none and runs on your keys or a subscription you already pay for, while Zed's Pro plan includes token credits.

goose is an open-source local agent with a native desktop app on macOS, Linux and Windows plus a full command-line tool. Its Claude answer is Yes, through Anthropic directly and via Bedrock, Vertex, Snowflake, Databricks and Copilot, and the vendor names Claude 4 as the model goose works best with today. OpenAI models work directly and through Azure OpenAI.

You bring your own model keys, or use a subscription you already pay for: a ChatGPT Plus or Pro sign-in for GPT-5 Codex models, a Claude Code subscription through its Claude ACP provider, or a Cursor subscription through Cursor Agent. Keys can point at your own endpoint or proxy, and custom providers are defined in a file.

Autonomous mode is the shipped default: goose run takes an instruction file and allows 1000 turns without user input, and recipes can be scheduled. It also runs as an Agent Client Protocol server, so Zed, JetBrains or VS Code can drive it.

**What it does well**

- Claude through Anthropic directly or via Bedrock and Vertex.
- Provider and model switch mid-session with /model.
- Whole sessions export and re-import elsewhere.
- goose says it connects to 70+ MCP extensions.

**Where it falls short**

- goose hosts no models: you pay your provider, or use a ChatGPT, Claude Code or Cursor subscription you already hold.
- No single sign-on; its own server authenticates with a shared secret key.
- No named enterprise support tier or service-level agreement is documented.

> "We typically support the latest and greatest models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and Cognition within minutes of their launch."
>
> From [Devin's own page](https://docs.devin.ai/cli/models), read on 2 September 2026

## Which one to pick

- **If you need a free agent that runs Claude on your own key:** pick [goose](/goose). goose is free, supports Claude through Anthropic directly or via Bedrock and Vertex, and runs on keys you hold, local models with no key at all, or a Claude Code or ChatGPT subscription you already pay for.
- **If you need Claude and GPT side by side in your editor:** pick [Zed](/zed). Zed's hosted catalog carries both Claude and GPT models, it installs Claude Agent and OpenAI Codex as external agents from its in-editor Agent Client Protocol registry, and Pro costs $10 a month.
- **If you need single sign-on and one shared budget for a team:** pick [OpenCode](/opencode). OpenCode includes single sign-on without an enterprise tier, one prepaid balance covers the whole workspace with an optional per-member limit, and members run Claude through an Anthropic key or OpenCode's gateway.
- **If you need to hand off migrations that span whole repositories:** pick [Devin](/devin). Devin's stated use for parallel sessions is migrations across many files, modules or whole repositories, each worked in its own environment with a shell, editor and browser, on Claude opus or sonnet.
- **If you already pay for ChatGPT and only need OpenAI models:** pick [Codex CLI](/codex-cli). Codex CLI draws usage credits from the same pool as ChatGPT Work and Workspace Agents and runs the Sol, Terra and Luna models of GPT-5.6, with no Claude model on offer.
- **If you need certifications and model choice per message:** pick [Augment Code](/augment-code). Augment Code holds an independent security audit (SOC 2 Type II) and a certified AI management system, lets you pick the model per expert, session or message, and offers the Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku and Fable families.

## How we ranked

We compared 8 agents on price, free plan and 3 questions a buyer asks, reading each vendor's pricing page and product pages between 2 September 2026 and 23 October 2026. We did not sign up for or run any of them. The product we could confirm most about comes first.

## Questions buyers ask

### Is Claude or ChatGPT better for coding?

Pick an agent that lets you try both: [Augment Code](/augment-code), [OpenCode](/opencode), [Zed](/zed) and [goose](/goose) are the 4 of the 8 with full model choice. Augment Code switches model per message, OpenCode per session or agent, Zed from one selector and goose mid-session. [Devin](/devin) offers Anthropic and OpenAI models side by side, with gpt among the three it recommends trying first.

### Can Codex CLI use Claude models?

No: [Codex CLI](/codex-cli)'s sign-in and model support cover OpenAI models only. You can pick the model per run and define custom providers. OpenAI, Amazon Bedrock and local models through Ollama switch natively, and OpenRouter, Azure or any other third-party provider needs manual setup in its configuration file.

### Does Gemini Code Assist support Claude or GPT?

Neither: [Gemini Code Assist](/gemini-code-assist) offers Google's own Gemini models only, on every edition. You do not pick a model vendor. An admin sets a project release channel, and that decides which Gemini models users get.

### Does Antigravity CLI run Claude?

Partly: Claude Sonnet and Opus 4.6 are selectable on the free plan and Google AI Pro until 2 November 2026, when Google removes them, and Claude Sonnet and Opus 5.5 are on paid Google AI Pro, Ultra and Enterprise. The free tier also includes Gemini 3.8 Flash and, until the same day, the open-weight GPT-OSS-120b. You choose from Google's fixed per-plan list, with no third-party provider selection.

### Which coding agents with Claude support have a free plan?

[Devin](/devin), [OpenCode](/opencode), [Zed](/zed) and [goose](/goose) run Claude and are among the 6 of the 8 with a free plan. [Antigravity CLI](/antigravity-cli) also has a free plan, and its Claude models are selectable on it until 2 November 2026. goose and Zed's free Personal plan both take your own Anthropic key.

### Can I bring my own Anthropic API key to a coding agent?

Yes: [OpenCode](/opencode), [Zed](/zed) and [goose](/goose) all take your own keys. OpenCode stores credentials locally per provider, Zed keeps keys in the system keychain on every plan including the free one, and goose can point at your own proxy or run local models. goose says it works with 15+ model providers, Anthropic among them.

### How much does Zed cost if I use Claude through it?

[Zed](/zed) Pro costs $10 a month, and Claude usage beyond its $5 a month in included token credits is billed at API list price + 10%. The Personal plan is free forever and Business is $30 per seat a month. On any plan you can skip hosted usage and reach Claude through your own Anthropic key.
