Windsurf has changed identity twice in two years: it began as Codeium, rebranded to Windsurf, and — after Cognition acquired it in 2025 — became Devin Desktop in June 2026. The app now opens on an Agent Command Center for orchestrating multiple agents rather than a single-agent editor, and its original Cascade agent was retired on 1 July 2026 in favour of Devin Local. Windsurf's own listing is explicit about who that leaves behind: its "not for" line names "people who prefer a lightweight VS Code extension, or who were attached to the independent Windsurf/Cascade product that Cognition has now folded into Devin," and its own cons cite "heavy brand and product churn" and being "now tied to Cognition's roadmap and its unified quota billing." ## Methodology

We drew alternatives from this site's coding-agents category (14 Published listings), the same corpus used for this site's other coding-agent alternatives pages. Devin itself was excluded on the facts: it is literally Cognition's other product, the same company whose acquisition and rebrand is the reason this page exists, so it cannot answer a gap it caused. Claude Code, Aider, OpenAI Codex CLI and OpenCode were excluded as a group: all four are terminal/CLI-first agents with no graphical editor, a different modality entirely from the standalone IDE experience Windsurf's displaced users are looking to replace. Juggler, Zot and OpenHands were excluded as a second group: each is a session-management harness or workbench that orchestrates other agents' sessions (branching trees, Telegram bridges, cloud orchestration) rather than a full code editor in its own right. Replit Agent and Bolt.new were excluded for a third reason: both are browser-based app-scaffolding tools aimed at building a new app from a prompt, not general-purpose editors for working inside an existing large codebase the way Windsurf was. A tool qualifies only if it is a real, standalone code editor or editor extension that answers a specific part of Windsurf's own admitted gap.
