The datasheet for every AI agent

Vapi vs Retell AI

Vapi and Retell AI are the two leading bring-your-own-model voice-agent platforms: Vapi is the better-funded platform built for maximum control and the cheapest headline rate, while Retell AI ships more of the tooling out of the box.

Vapi and Retell AI are each other's closest rival in this site's voice-agents category. Both listings already name the other as the primary alternative, and for good reason: both are developer-first, bring-your-own-model orchestration layers, not a closed, all-inclusive product like Bland AI or a no-code builder like Synthflow AI.

A team picks its own speech-to-text, language model and text-to-speech provider on either platform. Each handles the hard real-time problems of a phone call underneath: turn-taking, interruption handling, low latency. Where they diverge is company shape and what ships out of the box.

Vapi was founded in 2023 by University of Waterloo classmates Jordan Dearsley and Nikhil Gupta. It has raised $72M total: a $20M Series A from Bessemer in December 2024, then a $50M Series B from Peak XV in May 2026, at a reported ~$500M valuation. Amazon Ring is a customer, chosen after evaluating more than 40 AI voice vendors.

Retell AI, founded the same year by five co-founders led by CEO Bing Wu, took a leaner path. It raised a single $4.6M seed round from Alt Capital in 2024, through Y Combinator's Winter 2024 batch. By April 2026 it had reached $60M in annualized revenue, up roughly 650% year-over-year, and stayed profitable with a team of only 20 to 25 people.

The product difference tracks the funding difference. Vapi pushes bring-your-own-everything furthest: it ships no owned speech models at all. Its distinguishing feature is squads, multiple specialised agents that hand off to one another within a single call, built for teams running complex, multi-step call flows.

Retell AI ships more of the surrounding product instead: an auto-syncing RAG knowledge base that agents pull from live, batch calling for outbound campaigns at scale, and a built-in AI quality-assurance layer that simulates conversations to test an agent before it goes live. A Vapi developer would otherwise have to build or buy that tooling separately.

Retell AI's own proprietary turn-taking model targets roughly 600ms latency, by its own documentation. Vapi's own documentation claims a sub-500ms average. Those two numbers come from each vendor's own marketing, not one independent benchmark, so treat them as claims rather than a measured result.

Both support Model Context Protocol tool calling. Retell AI documents the more explicit integration: an MCP server for managing agents from MCP-capable clients, plus mid-call MCP client tool calls. Vapi lists MCP support only generically, alongside function calling.

Integrations follow the same split. Retell AI's published list is broader on the contact-centre side: Five9, Amazon Connect, Nice and Talkdesk, alongside Salesforce, HubSpot and Zapier. Vapi's own list stays narrower: Twilio, Vonage and SIP telephony, plus model providers.

Pricing headlines favor Vapi, but both are stacked, component-based rates that run well past the advertised number once a real model and voice are added, re-confirmed live 2026-08-20 against both vendors' own pricing pages. Vapi's Build tier is $0.05/min for its own orchestration fee alone, with model, voice and telephony billed through on top; a practical all-in cost commonly runs $0.13 to $0.33/min. Its Scale tier is a custom annual contract, with HIPAA metered at an extra $2,000/month and Zero Data Retention at $1,000/month on either tier.

Retell AI's pay-as-you-go range is $0.07 to $0.31/min, built from roughly $0.055/min for its own voice infrastructure and $0.015/min for text-to-speech, plus the chosen LLM. GPT-4.1-class models add about $0.045/min; Claude 4.6 Sonnet adds about $0.08/min. Its knowledge base, verified numbers, PII removal and AI QA layer are billed as separate add-ons: $8/month, $10/month, $0.01/min and $0.10/min after 100 free minutes, respectively.

Neither platform has a permanent free tier. Vapi and Retell AI each give roughly $10 in trial credits, and both require a card on file before real usage begins.

Limitations
  • The advertised $0.05/min is only the orchestration fee. Real all-in cost typically lands around $0.13 to $0.33/min once model, voice and telephony are added. (1 source)
  • Developer-first: it rewards engineering ownership and is not a turnkey no-code tool for non-technical teams.
  • Compliance is metered separately even on the Scale plan. HIPAA costs an additional $2,000/month and Zero Data Retention $1,000/month, on top of the per-minute rate and contract. (1 source)
  • Component-based pricing hides complexity. The $0.07/min headline climbs to roughly $0.11/min on a basic build and past $0.13–$0.20+/min once you add a stronger LLM, quality voice, telephony, knowledge base, and safety features. (1 source)
  • Developer knowledge is required, and independent reviews report a limited visual builder and slow support responses. (2 sources)

Retell AI

Product and engineering teams that want a low-latency, human-sounding phone agent with flexible model and telephony choice.

From $0.07–$0.31 / min

Verdict: Vapi or Retell AI?

Pick Vapi if you want the cheapest possible headline orchestration rate and the widest bring-your-own-model flexibility, including multi-agent squads for complex call flows. It's also the platform to pick if you're building at a scale where Vapi's better-capitalized enterprise features (HIPAA, zero-data-retention, dedicated volume contracts) matter: it's what Amazon Ring chose after evaluating more than 40 vendors.

Pick Retell AI if you'd rather not build the surrounding tooling yourself. An auto-syncing knowledge base, batch calling and a built-in AI QA and simulation layer all ship in the product, and its voice quality is the more consistently cited strength in user reviews. Its component pricing still stacks above the $0.07/min headline, but it's broken down transparently, component by component, on its own pricing page.

Both remain resolutely developer-first. Neither is a no-code tool, so a non-technical team evaluating either should expect to write code, or to lean on a partner who will.

Skip Vapi if you want more shipped out of the box rather than assembling it yourself. Skip Retell AI if you need Vapi's deepest bring-your-own-everything flexibility, or its more battle-tested enterprise compliance add-ons at extreme scale.

Frequently asked questions

Are Vapi and Retell AI direct competitors?
Yes. Both listings on this site already name each other as their closest rival: Vapi's alternatives rail calls Retell AI "the closest real rival," and Retell AI's alternatives rail calls Vapi back the same thing. Both are developer-first, bring-your-own-model voice-agent orchestration platforms competing for the same engineering-team budget, not all-inclusive products like Bland AI or no-code builders like Synthflow AI.
Which is cheaper, Vapi or Retell AI?
Vapi's headline is lower: $0.05/min in orchestration fees alone, versus Retell AI's $0.07–$0.31/min pay-as-you-go range. Neither number is the real cost. Vapi's practical all-in rate commonly lands around $0.13–$0.33/min once a model, voice and telephony are added; Retell AI stacks to roughly $0.13–$0.20/min once fully specced with a comparable LLM and voice. Retell AI's add-ons (knowledge base, verified numbers, PII removal, AI QA) are priced and itemized separately on its pricing page. Vapi's enterprise compliance add-ons (HIPAA, Zero Data Retention) are flat monthly fees, not per-minute.
Which has better call quality, Vapi or Retell AI?
Retell AI's voice quality is the most-cited strength in its own user reviews, backed by a proprietary turn-taking model the company documents at roughly 600ms latency. Vapi's own documentation claims a sub-500ms average latency. Those two figures come from each vendor's own marketing rather than a single independent benchmark run against both platforms, so they should be read as each company's own claim, not a verified head-to-head result.
Do Vapi or Retell AI have a free tier?
Neither has a permanent free tier. Vapi and Retell AI each offer roughly $10 in free trial credits to build and test before committing, with full platform access during the trial, but real call volume on either platform requires a card on file and usage billing from there.
Which is more established or better funded?
Vapi is the better-capitalized company by a wide margin: $72M raised total across a $20M Series A (Bessemer, December 2024) and a $50M Series B (Peak XV, May 2026), at a reported ~$500M valuation. Retell AI took the leaner path: a single $4.6M seed round in 2024 through Y Combinator, reaching $60M in annualized revenue by April 2026 (up roughly 650% year-over-year) while staying profitable with a team of only 20 to 25 people, a capital-efficiency story Vapi's larger raises don't need to tell.
