The short answer

Pick Claude Code if you want a terminal-native agent built around Anthropic’s Claude models, with paid access and an agent SDK for workflows. Pick Cline if you want a free, open-source client and control over the model provider, while accepting setup and model costs of your own. Cline also offers paid hosted model access; neither product includes its own deployment service.

Model choice and control

Claude Code uses Anthropic’s Claude models. You can choose a model within that family and bring your own Anthropic API key or use a supported cloud account, but you cannot route it to GPT or open-weight models. That suits buyers who want a single-vendor setup and do not need to switch providers.

Cline supports Claude, GPT, other providers and local models. Its open-source client is free, but with the BYO-key route you supply the credentials and pay the provider. ClinePass is $9.99/month for 2-5x rate limits on curated open-weight models; hosted usage-billing is also available. Choose Cline when provider choice or running your own model matters more than a bundled, managed experience.

Setup and workflow

Claude Code is terminal-native and composes with scripts and CI. It also has VS Code and JetBrains extensions, a web app, mobile apps and GitHub Actions integration. Its Agent SDK exposes the same agent loop as a Python or TypeScript library. This is a fit for developers who want an agent in shell-based engineering workflows, not a full graphical editor.

Cline runs as an editor extension, JetBrains plugin or terminal client, with CI support and an embeddable Node.js SDK. The free core means you manage the model key or local model yourself. Auto-approval and headless mode allow unattended runs, but Cline’s quality depends on the model supplied. Enterprise adds support, an SLA and governance at a custom price; those are not part of the free core.

Price and ongoing costs

Claude Code’s Pro plan is $20/month billed monthly or $17/month billed annually. Max starts at $100/month. The free Claude tier does not include Claude Code, so there is no free Claude Code plan. Usage-based costs can rise on long-running tasks, and heavier use may require Max for more headroom.

Cline’s core client is free, but BYO-key users pay their provider, and API costs can rise with usage. Cline’s hosted usage-billing is pay-as-you-go; Enterprise is custom-priced. Pick it if you want to choose how to pay for models and can handle setup. Pick Claude Code if its Claude-only approach and paid plan fit better than managing model providers yourself.
