How we chose these alternatives
We drew every alternative from this site's own Published, individually-researched coding-agent listings — the same corpus behind /best-ai-agents — rather than compiling a fresh, unverified list. A tool qualifies only if it is a genuine standalone coding agent (not a Claude product) we have already fact-checked against its own pricing page, with sourced pros, cons and a "best for" call. At launch we deliberately left out three agents that show up heavily in the wider conversation around this query — OpenCode, Codex CLI and Gemini CLI — because we had not yet independently researched and published a listing for them; we would rather ship fewer verified alternatives than pad the list with ones we had not checked ourselves. Codex CLI and OpenCode have since each cleared their own independent listing research and were added. Gemini CLI itself never cleared that bar before Google discontinued it: it announced Gemini CLI's retirement at I/O on May 19, 2026 and fully sunset it for free and personal users on June 18, 2026, replacing it with Antigravity CLI — so rather than research and list a tool free users can no longer use, we researched and added its live successor instead, placed as the newest terminal-native entrant. Factory has since cleared that same bar and is added here too, placed last as the most different entry: it is not a coding assistant you interact with directly but a multi-agent SDLC platform, included because "alternative" genuinely covers a buyer deciding between Claude Code and a fuller enterprise automation pitch. The order runs from the closest terminal-native analogs to the more different picks — multi-agent orchestration, full app generation, ecosystem-bundled terminal tools, then the full-SDLC enterprise platform.
