Codex CLI
OpenAI's terminal coding agent for inspecting, editing and running repository code from the shell.
From FreeWhy it's on this listOpenAI's terminal-native agent and the closest peer in the model-vendor-owns-the-CLI category. Apache-2.0 open source, but usage is bundled into a ChatGPT account and drawn from that plan's pooled credits, with pay-as-you-go top-ups after limits. OpenAI's own docs put typical cost at $100-$200 per developer per month for active use — meaningfully above Muse Code's Standard rate on input tokens, comparable on output. There is no Contributor-style data-for-discount tier: ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Business are the only published plans. Best fit if you want OpenAI as your model vendor and the same terminal-first shape, with a published bundled price rather than Muse Code's per-token variability.

Cline
Open-source coding agent for VS Code, JetBrains, the terminal and CI, running on whichever model you bring.
From FreeWhy it's on this listThe open-source (Apache-2.0) BYOK alternative if you want more surface than a pure terminal: editor, terminal and SDK, with an optional ClinePass ($9.99/month) for flat-rate access to curated open-weight models. Like Aider, the core is free with zero platform markup and you bring your own key, so the cost ceiling is the same per-token shape Muse Code sells. Unlike Aider, Cline adds GUI surface and a hosted usage-billing path (Cline, 100+ models) for teams that don't want to manage keys at all. Best fit if you want Muse Code's per-token honesty but prefer a GUI agent in your editor to a pure CLI loop.
Where it improves on Muse Code
- +Reviews code · YesIt reviews diffs someone else wrote, either interactively on files and pull requests or unattended in GitHub Actions posting a review comment.Source ↗
- +Whole-codebase work · YesRepository-wide migrations are a stated use case, though the vendor is explicit that it never indexes a repo and instead uses partial-file analysis and summarisation.Source ↗
- +Claude · YesClaude is supported and is the vendor's recommended coding model, reachable through Cline's own billing, through Anthropic directly, or via Bedrock and Vertex.Source ↗
Trade-offs against Muse Code
- −Pooled budget · PartlyOrganisation members draw on providers and billing configured centrally by an admin, and spend is reported per team and per member, but no per-seat budget cap is documented.Source ↗
- −Opt out of training · PartlyCline states it never trains on your code, and BYOK keeps requests out of its infrastructure entirely, but its privacy notice puts training on whichever model provider you choose and their opt-out.Source ↗

Where it improves on Muse Code
- +Done-for-you service · PartlySoftware you run yourself, but the vendor also sells advisory and implementation engagements that deploy agents alongside your team.Source ↗
- +Claude · YesClaude Sonnet, Opus and Haiku are all sold through the vendor's own LLM proxy, and can equally be reached with your own Anthropic key.Source ↗
Trade-offs against Muse Code
- −Multi-agent · PartlyA parent agent can delegate to sub-agents, but the documented TaskToolSet runs them sequentially and blocks, so it is delegation rather than parallel coordination.Source ↗
- −Opt out of training · PartlyRunning it locally or self-hosted keeps code out of vendor hands entirely, but the cloud privacy policy reserves model training on your content with no opt-out published.Source ↗
